Last day of January! WOW! I cannot believe how fast time is flying by.
Today in Writer's Workshop we did another group write based on a story called What is Most in the World. Each page describes something that is "est". For example.. The ugliest thing in the world is a blob fish giving birth to a drooling baby (Thanks for that example Caitlynn). We are laughing at this.
This afternoon in math we reviewed double digit addition and subtraction and talked about the different ways that these equations can be solved. Please ask your child what is their favourite strategy.
At the end of the day we watched about half an hour of the movie On the Way to School. This is a real eye opener. We will finish this movie on Thursday!
Have a wonderful evening!

Today was a wonderful day. We added 2 new reading strategies to our CAFE menu. Under fluency we added Voracious reading and I PICK. Please ask your child what these strategies refer to. (Voracious Reading which means practice practice practice and read books that you love. I Pick means I pick a good book to read. Purpose - why am I reading this book? Interested - am I interested in this book. Comprehend - do I understand what I am reading. Know - do I know most of the words?)
During Writer's Workshop we continued working on our alphabet stories. We wrote another story together about Hawaii and then the class headed off to work on their individual projects. A few kids have published their books and are currently working on their illustrations.
During Math we reviewed estimating. We came up with 3 estimation strategies for adding double digits. For example if the questions is 34 +27 here are some strategies:
1. Add only the 10s and that would be a good estimate. 30+20 is 50
2. Round both numbers to the nearest 10. 34 to 30 and 27 to 30, 30+30 is 60 = good estimate.
3. Take only one of the numbers to the nearest 10. 34 to 30 +27 is 57= a good estimate.
At the end of the day we tried to watch a movie called On the Way to School. It ties in with a child's rights and responsibilities. But it was not to be today as we had major technical difficulties. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

We are working on our CAFE strategies. Today we put up our CAFE board. Please ask your child what is the purpose of CAFE? (Strategies to help us become better readers.) We added a strategy to accuracy today. The strategy is called Flip the Sound. Please have your child explain this strategy to you.
During Writer's Workshop we learned about writing lists and why that might be important in our own lives. Please ask your child what kind of list they wrote today.
In Math today we continued to work on our division and solving equations using problems. Today we worked on this as a whole group.
Today was the last day for Mission Impossible. The last 2 weeks have been so much fun.
I am encouraging all of the kids in my class to read my blog with you every night. I am hoping this will become part of their daily responsibilities. I often ask questions for them to reply to and it also provides parents with detailed information about our day.

Today I emailed all parents a copy of the curriculum newsletter. If you did not receive it please email me at klsloane@cbe.ab.ca.
We have started working on something called the CAFE. CAFE stands for comprehension, accuracy, fluency and expand vocabulary. This approach allows us to review and introduce new strategies that will help us become better readers. Our first strategy under comprehension is "Check for Understanding". We are working on this strategy during guided reading. The kids each a short passage to me and then I ask Who was that about and what happened?
Today we cleaned out our bins. This was long over due. We had almost no pencils in our bins and surprisingly after our clean up there suddenly appeared many many pencils in the bins.
Today we worked on a division worksheet. I am really happy with how things are coming along. Just to clarify as I accidentally said the wrong thing today in math, this is what each number in a division equation represent. The first number means how many altogether. The second number means how many in each group and the final number means how many groups there are. We will get it straight soon enough.
We have started to read a novel called I am Malala. This story ties in perfectly with our current social studies topic of the Rights and Responsibilities of the Child.

Today was a very important day in our classroom.....it's report card day!!!! I reminded the kids to only open their report card once they are home for fear that some papers may be misplaced.
We started with 2 rounds of Daily 5. I met with one group this morning to review comprehension strategies. We once again talked about using the glossary, re-reading and reading ahead to help us understand unfamiliar words.
We had gym and music this morning. Please students remember to bring your precorder to school each Monday and Wednesday.
During Writer's Workshop we talked about revising and editing. I have also posted a sign up sheet where kids can sign up for a one to one writing conference with me. During this time we will review one story of their choice with the hopes of publishing it into a book. My first conference was with Elise and she has already started illustrating her book.
In math we learned division. It was our first day. I was so impressed with how well the kids transferred what they knew about multiplication over to division. We played a game to help us understand breaking numbers down into equal groups. Please ask your child how to play this game. It can easily be played at home for extra practice.
At the end of the day we met with Ms. Thomas' class to continue talking about rights and responsibilities. We did a fun activity where the kids were placed with a partner and given a card that had either a right or responsibility on it. Once the kids had their card they discussed it with their partner to make sure they had a clear understanding of what their card meant. Then they were required to walk around, talk to others and find the right or responsibility that went with their card.

Happy Friday Families.
We sure have enjoyed the nice sunny weather this week.
Today we had one round of Daily 5 and then we went to choir. In choir we started to warm up with a bunch of different tongue twisters. We learned a few new songs and listened to the new Music Monday Song Sing it Together.
When we came back from choir we did a word problem math assessment. Here is what the problem said: Our class is going to the zoo. Parents will help with driving. Plan how many cars you will need. Show your work. Please talk with your child about this word problem. I reminded everyone that they also need to include drivers along with 25 kids.
We had a new round of Club Friday today. It was a lot of fun.
Report cards go home on Monday. Parents please send me an email so I have everyone's current email address. I will be sending home the curriculum news letter via email. Thank you very much.

Tomorrow is Club Friday from 10:45-11:45.
Cookie fundraiser order forms were sent home today.
This morning we followed our usual routine of Daily 5, Gym, Writer's Workshop and then Words Their Way. Next week we will be getting new words.
This afternoon in math we learned a new game called Cover Me. This game can be played at home. You need:
- 10x10 grid (I printed one off of google)
- some counters
- 4 sets of cards numbered 1-5
- a piece of paper.
Each player takes a turn and flips over 2 cards. You use those cards to make a multiplication sentence. You then represent that sentence on the grid with the counters in any spot you choose. You then write down the equation and the product. Each turn you add your products together. When you can no longer represent your sentence on the array the game is over and the player with the greatest total product wins the game.
At the end of the day we worked with our other grade 3 buddies and make a t chart comparing rights and responsibilities.

This morning during guided reading I worked with 2 groups on creating a travel brochure. This brochure was designed to promote a place/setting in a book they had read during guided reading. The idea was to discuss the setting of the story and describe it in a persuasive manner.
Today during Writer's Workshop we had a choice of which story to work on: Cookie's Week, Fortunately/Unfortunately and The Great Blue House. Soon some students will be ready to publish their story.
Today in Math we continued to talk about Multiplication. Tomorrow will be our last day to work on this topic. We will take a break for a few weeks and then re-visit. We talked about related multiplication facts and how the product does not change when you switch the order of the factors. On Friday we will be moving on to division.
At the end of the day we worked on our Social Studies project. Tomorrow we will be moving on and talking more about the difference between rights and responsibilities.
Friday is Club Friday.

So nice and warm outside today. The kids loved being outside and getting some fresh air.
This morning we had 2 rounds of daily 5. During this time I met with my guided reading groups. We are really focussing on re-telling the events of the stories we read. In the next week or so we will be starting something called CAFE. CAFE focusses on reading and comprehension strategies that students can use at school and home. I will post the strategies each time we learn a new one. CAFE stands for comprehension, accuracy, fluency and expression.
In Writer's Workshop we listened to a story called the Great Blue House. This story is organized based on the seasons and how each season affects the house. Our job as writers was to then choose a character or an object and write about how they are affected by the seasons.
This morning we re-visited how to use the iPad to take a video and upload it to IRIS. Starting tomorrow IRIS will be a choice for Daily 5. Things that can be put on IRIS at school all have to be academic related. After DEAR we helped our grade 1/2 buddies with their puppet shows. We videotaped them and then uploaded their video to IRIS. The grade 3s were amazing helpers.
In Social Studies we have started to learn about rights and responsibilities. We are working with Ms. Thomas' class on this. Our first assignment was to create a collage using words and pictures of things we like about the world and things we would change. We will eventually be talking about the rights and responsibilities of children in Ukraine, Tunisia,Peru and India. We will compare our country to theirs.
As I write this blog I am so thankful to have over 20 expert editors. I often make mistakes typing and my 25 sets of helpful eyes never let a mistake slip by. Thank you team!

Happy Friday. So nice to finally have some warmer weather. This morning our schedule was as follows:
1. Daily 5
2. Gym (gymnastics)
3. Daily 5
4. Snack
5. Writer's Workshop. We are still working on our Fortunately/Unfortunately stories. Today we were reminded about what is expected when we are writing. We need to have punctuation, spaces, correct spelling, sentences that make sense, and juicy words. All of these expectations need to be checked for in the editing/revising stage of the writing process.
6. Math - we are still learning about multiplication. We have learned to represent multiplication using equal groups and repeated addition and today we practiced making arrays. Here was the challenge: Jesse's class is raising money for hunger relief. The children are making pompom people to sell. They have different size boxes. They want to pack the pompom people in equal rows in the boxes. Find ways to pack 25 pompom people in equal rows.
7. Mathletics
Have a wonderful weekend!
P.S. Please do not forget to do your multiplication homework this weekend and return it on Monday.

Sure hoping today is the last blue day in a very very long time.
Today during Writer's Workshop we listened to a story called Fortunately. We listened to this story and had to figure out how it was organized. Here is what we decided: Caitlynn says "First it starts with fortunately and the pages are colourful and then the next page its all shades and it says unfortunately and it keeps going in a pattern". Our job was then to model our writing after this book. We had to choose a character and then write a story about them following this pattern. We also talked about the writing process. We are currently in the drafting phase. Next we will move onto editing and revising and finally publishing. I have asked the kids to google how to make easy kid books. I would love to hear any ideas and suggestions.
This afternoon in math we focused on using repeated addition to solve a variety of questions. I have sent home a worksheet for the kids to do. If possible please return by Monday. Working with your child on this sheet will give you a lot of information about how they are performing/understanding multiplication.
At the end of the day we worked on Words Their Way. Today's activity was a lot of fun because the kids gave each other spelling tests. I heard a lot of giggling and saw a lot of smiles during this activity.
I also wanted to share with you something that happened today that really made my heart swell. When we were working on our multiplication word problem I heard many kids say "I love Math. I love doing multiplication. This is so fun." To me this is what math should be about. It should be fun!

Well yesterday and today were blue days. I hear the weather is going to warm up. Fingers crossed. These kids could really use some outside time.
Yesterday (and today) we learned about using books to model our writing after. We read a story called Cookie's Week. After reading this book, I asked the class how this book was organized. The class decided that the book was organized based on the days of the week. It also included other features which we decided was: an action occurred which was then followed by a consequence. After this discussion it was the kid's turn to write their own Cookie's Week story. The expectations were as follows: choose your own character, organized your story based on the days of the week, have your character do an action which is then followed by a consequence. I encouraged the kids to be funny.
Mrs. McBride has sent homework for our class. It is on page 2 and 3 of their music books. Please complete by next Monday.
In math we learned a new game called Closest to 12. Please have your child explain this game to you. Today in math we also did some procedural writing. Each child wrote down the steps to this new game which can then be kept in their math game duo-tang.
At the end of the day we worked on Words Their Way. Everyone has new words they are working on sorting.
Swimming forms are due on the 16th.
Have a wonderful evening.

What a freezing cold day. The kids had a blue day today and stayed inside for recess.
I am happy to report that my voice is almost completely back to normal. This makes me so happy especially because I can start reading books to the kids again. I sure missed being able to read to them last week. That being said Gena was a great helper last week and read a book about multiplication to the class.
Today at lunch Gracelyn and Gena attended their first Arbour Day meeting. These two girls have selected as Arbour Day Ambassadors. Gracelyn and Gena made a brief presentation to the class about what they learned:
- trees are important because they give us many useful things.
This includes
- oxygen
- they clean the air of carbon dioxide
- paper towels and paper
- wood for houses and doors
- other school supplies (scribblers and journals).
Today in gym we started gymnastics. This was super fun!
Today in math we worked on representing multiplication questions. We learned some new strategies today thanks to Jaelyn and Gena.
Jaelyn says "If you had a question and it was 5x2 it is exactly like 5+5".
- every question that you multiply by 2, all you do is double the other factor.
Gena says "If you have a question that is 5x1, you have 5 groups with one in each group and because there is only one in each group it has to equal 5."
- when ever you multiply a number by 1 the answer is always the other factor in the question.
We finished our inquiry projects today and we will be moving on to a new topic later this week.
Please remember to always bring your precorder to school on Monday and Wednesdays.
We have library tomorrow.

Happy Friday everyone! Starting today we will have a new schedule for Fridays. We will now have gym or music on Friday from 9:05 - 9:30. We will alternate each week. Today we had music with Mrs. Thomas' class.
This morning I worked one to one with students on their reading. I will be handing in my report cards to administration on Monday for review. I will check the exact date they come home near the end of January. Braydon tells me that report cards are going home on January 23. Thank you Braydon.
Please work on representing multiplication equations up to 5x5 at home. Any extra practice drawing arrays will be very helpful.
Don't forget about swimming forms.
Thank you Owen for reminding the class that you need to bring your precorder to school every Monday and Wednesday.

Happy Thursday everyone.
Today was pretty much a run of the mill kind of day. Our routine was just as it usually is on a Thursday.
We continue to work on our paragraphs during Writer's Workshop. Just before lunch we worked with our word sorts for Words Their Way.
During math we continued to work on developing our multiplication strategies. We played our dot game and represented the equal groups in our math journals. We also did a visual journal page on arrays as this seems to be a more challenging concept to grasp. We also played 3 skip counting games that allowed us to practice skip counting by 3s, 4s and 5s.
At the end of the day we worked on our inquiry projects. We are getting close to completion.
Please do not forget to send the swimming and peace ambassador forms back to school. Thanks Gena for this reminder.

Yay today it was warm enough for the kids to go outside. I am also happy to say that I had a bit more voice today than yesterday. I am so proud of these little people and how quickly they become quiet to ensure I do not have to strain my voice.
In Writer's Workshop today each student practiced writing their own paragraph on a topic of choice. We first started with the pre-write which helped us organize our ideas.
We had gym and music today and the most exciting thing happened. We got our precorders!!!!
After lunch we had DEAR and then moved onto math. I taught the kids a new math game with dot cards. This game emphasizes some important multiplication concepts such as equal groups. It also allowed the students to use a number of different strategies to figure out how many dots there were altogether. Their partner would take 2-5 cards with equal groups on them and then the other partner would have to use one of their strategies to figure out how many. Many kids used skip counting and repeated addition. After this game we work on a page in our visual journals. We represented 4 different multiplication strategies. Please ask your child what these strategies are.
Forms were sent home today about Peace Ambassadors and Swimming.
Have a wonderful evening.

January 3
Happy New Year dear families. I hope everyone had a wonderfully relaxing winter break. I would like to thank you for the many wonderful Christmas gifts I received. I feel so blessed.
I am still battling with some throat/voice issues. The kids have been wonderfully quiet as I try and what little voice I have .
Today I met with some guided reading groups to see how they are doing with the books they currently have. All groups will be receiving new books this week.
During Writer's Workshop we learned about how to write a good paragraph. Here is what a good paragraph includes:
1. One main idea (Kennedy)
2. Indent first sentence (Caitlynn)
3. Topic sentence (Sabeeh)
4. 5-7 sentences (Braydon)
5. Closing statement (Elly)
We had library this morning.
After lunch we did DEAR and then we started to talk about multiplication. Please post the answer to this question on the blog. What does x mean in a multiplication sentence?
At the end of the day we worked in our inquiry groups.
Have a wonderful evening.
